Russo brothers describe how secret Wars could Bring Them Back To marvel Studios

January 11, 2023 By lybfg

After the substantial success of Avengers: Infinity war and Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo left marvel Studios to tell other stories. Yet, even as they walked away from the house they helped build, the Russo brothers revealed that secret Wars could bring them back to marvel Studios. In a new interview, the directors describe why that’s the story that still appeals to them. Honestly, after pulling off an amazing feat in closing out the last ten years of marvel Studios storytelling, it makes sense they’d walk away. Both because success like that would be tough to repeat, and because they definitely want to tell stories about new, a lot more grounded characters.

Now, this could all just be great things to say during a press tour. Yet, it’s interesting because they picked a very certain story and one the MCU will likely adapt. It might even be sooner rather than later, depending on what they want to make with mutant characters. Kevin Feige could bring the X-Men into the marvel universe by means of a secret Wars-type story. The Dark Phoenix gang (and Deadpool) could show up as part of a multiverse and get the chance to bid a proper adieu to the characters. (Even Hugh Jackman said he might play Wolverine again if it’s to team up with the Avengers.)

We still know very little about phase 4 of the MCU. Yet, we do know that multiverse will play a big role going forward. Feige hinted that it will pop up in WandaVision and it’s absolutely in doctor odd and the Multiverse of Madness, now directed by Sam Raimi. marvel could take inspiration from the crisis On limitless Earths CW Arrowverse event and unite their universes by acknowledging what came before.

Why the Russo brothers would come back to marvel Studios for secret Wars

A year before DC had its first crisis On limitless Earths comic, marvel premiered their own event. all of the most popular marvel heroes and villains were whisked away to a planet by a cosmic entity to battle. The X-Men played a big part of it and were a third faction teamed up with Magneto. The story was big, silly, dire, and wonderful. The best event storytelling. In fact, this is why Joe and Anthony Russo are so enamored by it.

As Joe Russo said to BroBible.com

“I read that when I was 10 or 11, and it was the scale of getting all of the heroes together. It was one of the first major books to do that — that was really event-storytelling to me at its finest. and what happens when you put all of those personalities together. I also like the idea of villains having to team up with heroes. Anth and I like complicated relationships between heroes and villains, we like villains who believe they’re heroes in their own stories, so it’s all sort of built into this notion of Secret Wars. To execute something on the scale of Infinity War was directly related to the dream of Secret Wars, which is even larger in scale.”

If the Russo brothers came back to marvel Studios for secret Wars, it sounds like they’d try to make it even bigger than Infinity war or Endgame. how they would do it boggles the mind, because even the secret Wars comics were enormous and hard to pull off. It’s an idea that seems nearly destined to fail, but it’s precisely that challenge that attracts them.

As Anthony Russo said:

“It would be the greatest motion picture you could possibly imagine, so that’s what really excites us about the story — the ambition of it is even bigger than the ambition of the Infinity Saga.”

One idea they could steal directly from the comics is how the heroes get to the battle world. At the end of each monthly title comic before secret Wars debuted, the characters would check a large construct and disappear into it. From the first page of the first issue of secret Wars, audiences were in the thick of it.

A secret Wars motion picture would be a terrific way to introduce the X-Men, but it needs a lot a lot more marvel heroes to work. Captain America plays a big role, as does the Hulk and Spider-Man. The wonderful four and their villains Galactus and Dr. Doom are also very crucial to the story. Monica Rambeau’s Captain marvel also plays a crucial part, and the series introduces Spider-Woman. (Also, Ulysses Klaue plays a big role, but the MCU version of his character is dead.) The point of all this is that while marvel Studios adapting secret Wars is all-but inevitable, but they still have a lot of characters to introduce first.
